The coastline of Croatia is world renowned for its beautiful turquoise waters, pine forests and Mediterranean sunshine. The island of Losinj is one jewel in the archipelogo of islands that runs along this long coastline. It is the 11th largest Adriatic island by area, 33km long and almost 5km wide at its widest point. However, it is difficult to access and is often referred to as Croatia’s best kept secret. It has a mild, warm microclimate and unusually clean air that is home to over 200 medicinal plants as well as wild, steep hills of mountain pines and olive trees. In the early 19th century it was used as a health retreat for European nobility, which is still visible in the grand villas that fill towns like Veli Losinj or are tucked away overlooking quiet bays. Losinj now describes itself as an island of vitality, which is easy to understand when you smell the mountain herbs on the warm evening air. There is a spine of hills that run through the islands and rise up to the peak of Osoršćica or Televrin at 588m. This mountain was also the hermitage of the St Gaudentius, the 11th century bishop of Osor, and the patron saint of Losinj.
